Tata Hexa SUV Launch This Festive Season; Estimated Starting Price INR 10.99 lakhs

August 24, 2016
The Hexa SUV was unveiled by Tata Motors at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The Hexa is based on the Aria and is more of a crossover than an outright SUV. The concept features thoroughly reworked exteriors and new interiors inspired from the Zest and the BoltTata Hexa launch will take place by November 2016. The Aria turned out to be a total disaster for the company expects Hexa to turn things around. The Tata Hexa price in India is expected to be around INR 12-15 lakhs. The production-spec Hexa was on display at theAuto Expo 2016 and here, we bring you all the details regarding the concept including design and engines. Read on for new 2016 Tata Hexa Price and India launch details –
Tata Hexa Design 3

The 2016 Tata Hexa launch could have been delayed by the SC’s decision to ban new vehicles powered by a 2000 cc + diesel engine. A number of automobile manufacturers have delayed their launches due to this ban including Toyota (Fortuner), and Hyundai (Tucson). However, with the Supreme Court lifting the ban, Tata is expected to launch the Hexa in the coming months. Tata has a number of new launches lined up for the Indian market. These include the Hexa, Kite 5 and Nexon compact SUV. The Hexa will be the first of these new launches. It will be followed by the Tiago based compact sedan and the Nexon by early 2017.

Tata Hexa India Launch Date

Model NameExpected Launch Date
Tata Hexa Launch DateOctober-November 2016
The Tata Hexa launch date is very likely to fall during this year’s festive season. We guess that the launch of Hexa will happen by November. The Hexa will be a direct rival to the Mahindra XUV500 and the Toyota Innova Crysta. As we have been saying, the Hexa is, in essence, a glorified Aria, which is not at all a bad thing. The Aria has been one of the most modern offerings from Tata. And it is now highly likely that the Hexa will revive the fortunes of the slow-selling MPV. The Hexa was put on display at the Auto Expo 2016. It enthralled the show-goers with its rugged and masculine styling. Hence, the manufacturer seems to have got it right with the Hexa. Don’t be surprised to see the Hexa giving a tough time to the Mahindra XUV500.
The Hexa will also compete with the Toyota Innova Crysta. The Crysta, however, will be a more expensive offering and it is an MPV. On the other hand, the Hexa is an MPV-SUV crossover. Another possible rival could be the Honda BR-V. While much smaller and from a segment below the BR-V is also an MPV-SUV crossover.

Tata Hexa Price in India

The Tata Hexa price will be more than that of the Safari Storme. Hence, expect the Hexa to have a starting price of roughly Rs. 10.99 lakhs (ex-showroom). At this price, the Hexa will cost almost the same as the Aria. Also, our guess is that the Hexa could have a slight price advantage over the XUV500. Here is the expected Tata Hexa price list –
Variant-wise Tata Hexa Expected Price List
Tata Hexa LX Manual Transmission, 4×2Rs. 10.99 lakhs
Tata Hexa LX Automatic Transmission, 4×2Rs. 11.90 lakhs
Tata Hexa VX Manual Transmission, 4×2Rs. 12.30 lakhs
Tata Hexa VX Manual Transmission, 4×4Rs. 12.99 lakhs
Tata Hexa VX Automatic Transmission, 4×2Rs. 13.10 lakhs
Here’s a look at the major rivals of the Hexa and their pricing –
Mahindra XUV500Mahindra ScorpioTata Safari Storme
Rs. 12-17.37 lakhsRs. 9.33-15.05 lakhsRs. 10.37-15.21 lakhs
Toyota Innova Crysta (est.)Honda BR-V (est.)Renault Lodgy Stepway
Rs. 15-20 lakhsRs. 10-13 lakhsRs. 11.99-12.29 lakhs
According to our estimates, the Hexa will cost less than the XUV500, but slightly more than the Safari Storme. As is the case with most Tata products, it will score high on value for money. The petrol powered versions of the BR-V will be cheaper and the those of the Innova Crysta’s will be at par with the Hexa’s pricing.

Tata Hexa Mileage

We expect the Hexa to be slightly more fuel efficient than the Aria. This means that the Hexa could offer a mileage of 12 KMPL in city and around 15 KMPL on the highway.

Tata Hexa Design Review – Exterior

The resemblance to the Aria is quite clear, but Tata has done enough to give the car its own identity. Up front the new bonnet is much flatter and features a clam-shell design and while the headlamps are similar to the Aria, the grille with its wide, brushed aluminium insert does enough to mask the similarities. The bumper is the main highlight here which features a wide lower air dam with brushed aluminium surrounds. The edgy, muscular fog lamp housing features LED daytime running lights resulting in a very appealing front end.
The maximum resemblance to the Aria can be seen in the side profile which now features a plastic cladding for the wheel arches. Interestingly, the cladding features a Range Rover Evoque like kink in the curve which could possibly be a hint towards a greater involvement from Land Rover engineers. The rear has been completely redone. It now features horizontal Volkswagen like tail lamps adding a much-needed dose of character to the back end, as do the dual exhausts, the faux skid plate finished in brushed aluminium, blacked out pillar, etc.

Tata Hexa Interior

The Tata Hexa features all-black interiors and one can clearly see hints of the Zest and Bolt’s dashboards inside. The centre console features a prominent touchscreen with piano black surrounds and the overall angular theme works quite well. The steering wheel has been lifted straight from the Zest featuring audio and phone controls and finished in black with silver accents. The concept showcased at Geneva featured a six-seat configuration with captain seats for the middle row. There are 12V power sockets and A/C vents for the second and third-row passengers, while the cubby hole lined roof from the Aria has been ditched in favour of a much neater fabric lined roof. Occupant safety is ensured by the 6 airbags on board, Electronic Stability Control, projector beam automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers.

The design of the production version of the Hexa is not a major departure from the concept form, on the basis of what was showcased at the Auto Expo. And if that does turn out to be the case, then the Hexa will surely be a very good looking crossover. It is likely to stir things up quite a bit in the 10-15 lacs space. Tata has clearly taken a huge leap forward with the Hexa concept. This is in continuation with what it did with the Zest and Bolt. It will be interesting to see how they position the vehicle and what the price point will be like. The Tata Hexa SUV is another promising prospect from Tata Motors and will hopefully turn out much better than the Aria. Watch this space for more.

Tata Hexa Engine and Transmission

Tata’s upcoming crossover will go on sale with the 2.2-litre Varicor 400 diesel engine. We have already seen this engine on the Safari Storme. This unit makes 156 bhp of max power and a peak torque of 400 Nm. A six-speed manual will be offered as the standard transmission option. We are also expecting a 6-speed automatic transmission option to find its way into the Hexa’s lineup. The Tata Hexa will also get an All Wheel Drive setup along with a Land Rover like Terrain Response System.
